A Season Kick Off With Three Victories

Elma Roane Fieldhouse is blazing with the winning eye of the Tiger! After defeating Rhodes College and Missouri State, the University of Memphis Women’s Basketball team sends Samford home with their first loss of the season on Sunday, November 16, 2014.

Samford cranked up the volume with a 5-0 lead at the beginning of the first half.  Although they continuously fought to keep the lead, the Tigers conquered the first half 31-28.

A lot like the first half, Samford scores the first five points to retrieve the lead at 33-31. The teams go back and forth with the lead.  Memphis decides they no longer wants to share the lead.  Although Memphis’ Ariel Hearn, junior guard, did not score in the first half, she started the 11-0 run for the 42-33 lead with 15:32 on the clock.  She also added a late three pointer to give Memphis a bigger lead, ending the game at 64-48.

Mooriah Rowser, sophomore guard, led Memphis with 18 points. Breigha Wilder-Cochran added 12 points to the score bored. Courtney Powell, junior forward, came off the bench to spark her career high. Powell posted her first career double with 11 points and 11 rebounds in the Tigers win.

Memphis is set to play in Champaign, IL on Thursday, November 20th at 7 pm. They will return to the winning house, Elma Roane Fieldhouse, to play Minnesota on Sunday, November 23rd at 2 pm.
