Men’s Tennis Falls 4-3 to No. 49 Pepperdine

 

STILLWATER, Okla. – The No. 61 University of Memphis men’s tennis team (6-6 overall 2-0 American) was edged by No. 49 Pepperdine, 4-3, in a neutral site match at Oklahoma State University, Saturday.

 

The two teams, meeting for the first time since squaring off in the 2013 NCAA Round of 16, split two of the three doubles matches to start the afternoon off.  Pepperdine’s Guilherme Hadlich and Rakshay Thakkar defeated the Tiger pairing of Connor Glennon and Kai Lemke, 6-4, at No. 1.

 

The Tigers answered with a 6-3 win at No. 2 from Andrew Watson and Louis Asser, and the doubles point came down to the match at No. 3. Pepperdine jumped ahead with the 7-5 win at No. 3.

 

Kai Lemke had an answer for Memphis. The freshman defeated Tom Hill 6-2, 6-2, at No. 5 to even the match at 1-1. But Pepperdine went right back up with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 6 and took a 3-1 lead off a 6-3, 7-5 win at No. 2 singles.

 

Senior Connor Glennon started a Tiger comeback with a pair of tiebreak wins at No. 1, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (4). Andrew Watson, playing at No. 3 for the first time this season, then made it 3-all with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 comeback win.

 

Pepperdine closed out the win with a 7-5, 7-5 win at No. 4 singles to pick up their  eighth win of the season.

 

Memphis returns home next weekend to host a pair of matches. The Tigers will host Jackson State, Friday, at 2 p.m. and then hosts SMU, Saturday, at 1 p.m. in an American Athletic Conference contest.
