Pope John Paul II 28 VS Melrose Golden Wildcats 22
The Melrose Golden Wildcats will have to wait at least one more week to get their first victory of the 2016 season.
The game is scoreless until the second quarter. Quarterback Ahdai Paige finds #7 deep in the end zone, but the Golden Wildcats fail to convert on the 2 point conversion. Melrose almost goes into halftime with a 6-0 lead. With 7.9 seconds remaining in the first half, The Knights find the end zone and gets the extra point.
The score remains 7-6 until just under 5 and a half minutes left in the 3rd quarter when #6 Ken Jones scores a touch down. The two point conversion is good and Melrose now has the lead 14-7. On the following drive The Knights put seven more points on the board, and just like that we’ve got ourselves a ball game, 14-14. Pope John Paul scores seven more points by the end of the 3rd quarter.
The fourth quarter starts 21-14. The Golden Wildcats go down 28-14 when an Ahdai Paige pass is intercepted and returned for a touchdown. Paige quickly redeems himself by finding #7 in the end zone for the second time of the evening, and puts a ball in perfect position for a back peddling #32 to make good on the 2 point conversion.
It’s 28-22, Pope John Paul II. The Melrose defense keeps PJP II from scoring. The Golden Wildcats have the ball with less than 2 minutes left in the game. Just as they begin to March down the field The Knights intercept Ahdai Paige’s pass with 00:50 left of the clock. Pope John Paul barely escape with a victory. 28-22.
Next week the Melrose golden Wildcats will host the Covington Chargers. Dequan Dallas will play his first game of the season after missing three weeks due to injury in a pre-season scrimmage. Starsky Miller left the game early due to injury, not sure of his status yet for next Friday but I assume he will play. Michael Malone received treatment on his ankle during the game but continued to play. He is expected to play next week.
