Southern Heritage Classic 2015

(Memphis, TN) The Tennessee State University (TSU) Tigers defeated the Jackson State University (JSU) Tigers (35-25) Saturday night in the 25th annual Southern Heritage Classic.  The game marks TSU’s second win and JSU’s second loss of the season.

Tennessee State waisted no time getting on the scoreboard. It only took Oshay Ackerman-Carter  one play to connect with  Patrick Smith for a 64 yard completion and six points. That’s right TSU scored on their first play from scrimmage and that set the tone for the next 5 quarters of competition.  After TSU handled business on the field the band handled business from the stands in the Battle of The Bands”.

JSU quarterback, LaMontiez Ivy, threw for 72more yards than Carter.  However, Carter scored three touchdowns to his two.  Telvin Hooks (TSU) rushed for 68 yards on 14 carries, scoring two touchdowns.  Robert Johnson (JSU) rushed for 44 yards on 13 carries, scoring one touchdown. Carter threw for three touchdowns to three different receivers.  In addition to the first play of the game, Carter also  connected with Chris Sanders-McCollum and Joe Bowens for touchdowns.  Kicker Lane Clark was 5/5 in extra point attempts.

After the game each schools band traded songs with each other.  The exchange lasted for thirty minutes.  Jackson State’s band was no match for Tennessee State.
