IN REAL LIFE

January is National Mentoring Month (NMM).  Governor Haslam and Mayor Luttrell have declared NMM in Tennessee and Shelby County.  The Team UP Youth Mentoring Partnership and the Memphis Grizzlies Founation are the Tennesee affiliates of the National Mentoring Partnership.  As affiliates the two organizations are leading the implementation of MENTOR’s In Real Life campaign.  The In Real Life campaign is on mission to recruit 25,000 new mentors.

The In Real Life campaign is a long-term campaign to raise the awareness of the importance of mentors in our community. The mentors have a huge impact on the lives of the youth that they mentor.  The experience of being a mentor also has some benefits.  One of the best feelings in the world is the feeling of knowing you are helping someone and doing a good thing.

In 2014 President Obama launched My Brothers Keeper, an initiative aimed at helping more young men of color facing especially tough odds to stay on track and reach their full potential, so America can reach its full potential.  The entire NBA Family made a five year commitment to President Obama’s initiative.  As part of that commitment the NBA will partner with MENTOR: The National Mentoring Partnership to support the In Real Life campaign.

The Memphis Grizzlies Foundation and TEAM UP will host the following events throughout this National Mentoring Month:

·      Jan. 10: Mentor Night at FedExForum

·      Jan. 21: TEAM UP Youth Mentoring Partnership Breakfast

                o   Annual networking breakfast for members of the TEAM UP Youth Mentoring Partnership in Legends Lounge at FedExForum (open only to those                              invited).

·      Jan. 27-29: National Mentoring Summit

               o   Several representatives of the Memphis Grizzlies Foundation will travel to Washington, DC for MENTOR’s annual National Mentoring Summit, which                     will gather nearly 1,000 people representing mentoring across the United States to discuss the theme of “Connection / Growth / Opportunity.”
