Lady Tiger Tennis Takes #34 Houston to Wire in 4-3 Loss
HOUSTON – The University of Memphis (7-10, 2-1 American) took No. 34 Houston (11-4, 2-0 American) to the wire, but fell short of the upset in a 4-3 loss at Houston, Saturday.
Memphis started the afternoon out with an almost hour long doubles contest. After Houston picked up a 6-2 win at No. 3, Kathryn Hughes and Anki Wind came back to win at No. 1 singles, 7-5. The deciding match at No. 2 was close throughout, with the Lady Tiger tandem of Liza Tymnchenko and Marta Morga winning the tiebreaker, 7-3, for the 7-6 win, pushing Memphis up 1-0.
Hughes carried her doubles momentum in to singles play, putting Memphis up 2-0 with her 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles.
Wind then grabbed a 7-6 (4), 6-4 win at No. 1 singles over No. 33 ranked Despoina Vogasari for a 3-0 Memphis lead.
Houston got on the board with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 5, then got a 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 win from No. 107 Elena Kordolaimi to pull to 3-2 down. The Cougars evened the match following a three-set battle at No. 6 singles.
Charlotte Phillips won the first set against Memphis’ Tara McElroy, but McElroy battled back for a 6-3 second set win to force the third set. In the third, McElroy again came back, down 5-4, to force a third set tiebreak. Unfortunately, the home team got the 8-6 win in the breaker to knot the match at 3-all.
Houston closed out the conference win with a 7-5, 6-7 (4), 6-3 win at No. 3 singles to put an end to the four-hour match.
Memphis will stay in Houston and will face former Conference USA foe Rice, Sunday, at noon.
