MEMPHIS – The University of Memphis men’s tennis team (8-6, 3-0 American) remains perfect in conference play following a 4-2 win over No. 34 ranked SMU (15-4, 0-1 American), Saturday, at The Racquet Club of Memphis.

“That was a great college tennis match,” Head Coach Paul Goebel said. “We’ve put a lot of emphasis on our doubles play the last couple of weeks, practicing it a lot, and it paid off today. SMU’s been having a great season. We were very focused and composed on all the courts in singles, that’s great to see. Hopefully, this gives us good momentum for the last few weeks of the season.”

Memphis got a quick 6-1 win from the No. 1 doubles team of Connor Glennon and Kai Lemke to get some early momentum going. Freshman Ryan Peniston and Shakeel Manji then sealed the doubles point for the Tigers with a 6-4 win at No. 3 doubles.

Peniston then carried his quick momentum with him to his match at No. 2 singles, grabbing 6-0 first set win, then staying on the gas for a 6-3 second set win to put the Tigers up 2-0.

SMU got on the board with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 6 singles, then evened the match with a 6-2, 7-6 (5) win at No. 4 singles that saw No. 110 ranked Nate Lammons come back from 6-5 down in the second set to even the match.

Memphis senior Connor Glennon then closed out a comeback of his own. Down 4-1 in the first set, Glennon battled all the way back to win the opening set 7-5, then used a 6-3 second set win to put the Tigers up 3-2. Freshman Andrew Watson capped off the upset win with a 6-4, 6-1 decision at No. 3 singles to keep the Tigers perfect in American Athletic Conference play.

The Tigers return to the road this week to play a Monday match at No. 71 South Alabama. That will be Memphis’ final match of the month. The Tigers return home to host Middle Tennessee, Apr. 3rd, and will close out the 2015 home slate with an Apr. 5th match against VCU.
