Rough Day for Memphis Sports

The University of Memphis Tigers and the Memphis Grizzlies were both in action Saturday. Just as the Tulane Green Wave defeated the Tigers, the Grizzlies were preparing to take the court against the Denver Nuggets.

The University of Memphis Tigers put their five game winning streak on the line as they host Tulane. Austin Nichols 28 points and Pookie Powell’s nine assist was not enough to get the W. Shaq Goodwin Chipped in 14 points and nine rebounds. Nichols and Goodwin were the only two Tigers in double figures. The Tigers turned the ball over 16 times compared to Tulane’s 8. The Tiger bench only scored nine points.

The Zach Randolph-less Memphis Grizzlies suffered a 29 point(85-114) defeat at the hands of the 14-20 Denver Nuggets. Asked how close Randolph was to a return, Joerger simply responded, “hard to tell.” Mar Gasol was the Grizzlies leading scorer with 18 points. Gasol is currently averaging 20 ppg. The Grizzlies shot 14.3 % from three point range making only two of fourteen shots. The Nuggets had six players in double figures, three with double doubles.

“We’re not a team that’s perfected anything,” Conley said. “We’re going to keep learning and keep figuring this thing out as the season goes on.”

The Grizzlies next game is tonight (1/5/2015) at the Grindhouse against the New York Knicks. The University of Memphis Tigers next matchup is Thursday at SMU.
