MEMPHIS – The Memphis football team closed out a busy week of spring camp with a 100-play scrimmage in the wet and on the turf on the Park Avenue Campus, Sunday, in the team’s sixth practice of the 2014 spring camp.

“I think they continue to get better and continue to acknowledge that we’ve got work to do, which is kind of the first step, acknowledge that we’ve got a lot of work to do,” Head Coach Justin Fuente said. “I like the way they’ve approached it, I’m hopeful that we’ll approach it the same way on Tuesday. We have a lot of things we have to correct and a lot of work to do and see if we can continue to move forward.”

The Tiger offense scored a pair of touchdowns through the air and a pair on the ground in the scrimmage. The first touchdown of the scrimmage was a 36-yard pass completion from Paxton Lynch to Frank Wims. Lynch also completed a 35-yard pass to Tevin Jones for a touchdown later in the scrimmage.

The Tigers’ ground game also put two scores in, one from three yards out and the second from five yards out. Jarvis Cooper scored one of the two rushing touchdowns with his offensive unit.

“Some of the old guys that have been around played pretty well, and that’s without looking at the film. We need to continue working on situational stuff,” Fuente said. “We need to continue working on third downs, so we’ve got plenty of situational stuff to continue to work on that we haven’t really touched on so far.”

The Memphis defense, with a large contingent of newcomers this spring, forced a pair of fumbles, had three sacks and a trio of tackles for loss.

“They’re (the defense) continuing to find themselves too,” Fuente said. “We basically run the exact same scheme with the same calls the last couple of years because we had the same players every year and now it’s a whole cast of new guys, so you’ve got to continue to tweak the system and find out guys’ skill sets and try to play the best towards that. So as coaches, we’ve got to look at that and try to tweak it to fit those guys. We’ll go through some growing pains in that part of it, but at times, they flashed pretty well for us.”

The Tigers are back on the field for three practices next week. The spring camp will wrap up on Friday, April 10th with the Spring game at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium.
