The starting sophomore point guard for the Murray State Racers, Cameron Payne is one of the best-kept secrets in college basketball. Cameron Payne is 6-2 All American guard from Memphis, Tennessee. That is right, Memphis, Tennessee. Cameron was not a highly recruited high school prospect. The entire nation overlooked Cameron; expect Murray State and a couple of mid-major universities. Cameron was coming off the bench for a loaded Memphis AAU team. The team included fellow Memphians Nick King of Memphis and Johnathan Williams of Missouri. That was one of the major reasons colleges overlooked him. However, Murray State saw potential in the Lausanne Collegiate High School guard.
Cameron decided to go to Murray State. Murray State was very loyal to Cameron during the recruiting process. Coach Steve Prohm also gave Cameron the chance to learn at the point guard position during his freshman season. In his first season at Murray State, Cameron average 16.8 PPG, 3.6 RPG and 5.4 APG as a freshman. Cameron was considered for OVC Player of the Year last season.
Cameron entered his sophomore campaign as the favorite to win player of the year for OVC conference. Cameron is averaging 20.2 PPG, 3.6 RPG and 5.7 APG this season. The projectors were correct and Cameron is this season’s OVC Player of the Year.
Cameron has come a long way from being a role player on a powerhouse AAU team to a projected first round pick in the NBA Draft. Cameron posted something on his Instagram (smoothcp1), which fits him perfect, “Be So Good They Can’t Ignore You”. I cannot wait to see what kind of noise he is going make in the NCAA Tournament.
