Southern Heritage Classic ’17

Tennessee State University-17  VS Jackson State University-15

The Tennessee State Tigers scored when it counted: 1st quarter, 4th quarter, and 5th quarter.

Both teams  got on the scoreboard in the opening quarter.  Treon Harris found the end zone on 13 yard run on the Tigers opening possession, only four plays into the game.  Christian Jacquemin put JSU’s first three points on the board halfway through the 1st quarter. Lane Clark respond with a field goal of his own, on TSU’s next possession, to give Tennessee State a 10-3 lead at the end of the 1st quarter.

Adrian Salazar (25 yards) and Christian Jacquemin (49 yards) split a pair of field goals to bring JSU within one point (10-9) going into halftime.  Both teams go scoreless in the 3rd quarter.  All the excitement happens in the 4th quarter.  With 5:03 left on the clock, Patrick Smith (TSU) returns a punt 56 yards for the touchdown.  Then , Terrell Kennedy (JSU) returns the ensuing kickoff 89 yards for the touchdown. With 4:48 left in the game the score is 17-15 in favor of TSU.  With four seconds left on the clock TSU pulls the ole’ ice the kicker trick.  Of course Jacquemin makes the first kick but it doesn’t count.  Now with the game on the line, Jacquemin misses the 47 yard field goal that would have put JSU ahead 18-17 as the game clock expired.  But, he missed and for the 6th straight year The Tennessee State University Tigers win The Southern Heritage Classic.  JSU fans and players were in disbelief when the field goal attempt fell short.  Watch the reaction in the video below:

Tennessee State improves to 2-0 on the season.  Jackson State falls to 0-2.  The JSU Tigers look to get their first win against the Grambling Tigers on September 16th.  TSU will try to remain undefeated as they travel to play FAMU.
